Literature

J. Gudiol and S. A. I. Blanch, Pintura Gótica Catalana (Ediciones Polígrafa, S.A., Barcelona, 1986), pp 132-138, no. 415, p. 400, fig. 698

This superb gothic panel, the product of collaboration between two of the leading Catalan artists of the early 15th century, Bernat Despuig (1383 – Barcelona –1451) and Jaume Cirera (active Barcelona 1418 – 1449-50) is of the highest quality, with beautiful vibrant colours, original polychrome and gilding.

Published in the leading text on Catalan gothic pictures (J. Gudiol and S. A. I. Blanch, op. cit.), and entirely fresh to the market having been for many years in private Italian collections, it is in exceptional condition.

Our panel is very close to Cirera's Crucifixion in his Altarpiece of Saint Michael and Saint Peter commissioned for the Church of Sant Miquel de la Seu d'Urgell (Alt Urgell) and painted between 1432 – 1433, now in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, Barcelona (Inv. no. 015837-CJT).
