Each with the original high pricket above a turned tapering drip pan, the shaft decorated with ringed drums and central disk above a large second disk and flared circular foot, rich patina.

Exceptionally rare, late gothic period candlesticks of this type were of solid construction and substantial weight and height. In superb original condition, our pair was most likely used for lighting the domestic interior of the home of a wealthy family. Expensive items at the time of manufacture, these candlesticks would almost certainly have been used with beeswax candles. In the 15th century candles were made from tallow (animal fat) or beeswax. Beeswax candles were much more expensive than tallow but burned with a clear bright flame, did not smell and melted comparatively slowly.
